Students Draw on Nuclear Energy for STEM Insights

Date:

In preparation for National Nuclear Science Week, the AREVA TN North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN) chapter in Columbia, Md., recently spoke to more than 330 kids in four local elementary schools about nuclear science and technology.

Each year local NAYGN members visit schools, give presentations to 4th and 5th graders on the topic of nuclear energy, and encourage them to draw what they think about nuclear energy for the NAYGN Annual Drawing Contest. This year’s theme is “Nuclear Energy Packs a Punch”, emphasizing the significant energy density present in nuclear power.

The NAYGN Annual Drawings Contest supports the Public Information and Community Outreach initiatives outlined in the AREVA TN NAYGN chapter charter. NAYGN members use the opportunity to enhance their leadership and communication skills while teaching kids the benefits of nuclear energy to our community, economy, and environment. As part of AREVA’s focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, employees regularly volunteer in their communities’ schools and learning activities.

The winners of the drawing contest will be chosen in December 2015. Each winner’s school library will receive a collection of books and reference materials on nuclear science and technology with the name of the winning student inside the cover, honoring their accomplishment.
