AREVA has been a strong and consistent supporter of the Central Virginia Governor’s School for Science and Technology (CVGS) for over 30 years. Their employees have served on both the CVGS Foundation Board and Industrial Advisory Board, and have also been steadfast sponsors of our internship program, hosting interns for over 30 years. Employees from AREVA have served as research mentors for student projects and as expert judges in the Regional Science Fair, Regional Middle School Challenge and CVGS Research Symposium. The company has also provided financial support to CVGS through donations to our CVGS Foundation’s Opportunities Endowment, which provides funding for research opportunities and educational trips for our students. AREVA has even hired CVGS graduates for their facility in Lynchburg, Va., as well as other AREVA locations.
In addition to these efforts, CVGS has been fortunate to have AREVA employees visit as guest speakers for our students; it is a great advantage for our students to have professional engineers speak to them about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. Professionals in the field can convey their practical experiences and insights to students, and fuel potential career aspirations in a way that educators cannot. It is these STEM outreach efforts of businesses in the community, like AREVA, that will inspire the next generation of engineers and other STEM professionals.
AREVA engineer Darren Wood helped celebrate Engineers Week in Lynchburg, Va., with a visit to the AP Physics classes at the Central Virginia Governor’s School for Science and Technology, taught by Dr. Scott Douglass.
AREVA continues to be an integral asset to our school, helping us adhere to our mission: to develop leaders who possess the research and technical skills, the global perspective and the vision needed to address the challenges of a rapidly changing society. CVGS is a school for gifted students in mathematics, science and technology. It is important for our students to seriously consider a career path that will help meet the increasing demands of STEM-related industry. We have had a long and successful partnership with AREVA for over 30 years, and we look forward to continuing that relationship well into the future.
