AREVA Gators Go For STEM Students | AREVA North America: Next Energy Blog

Finis Southworth, AREVA Inc.’s Chief Technology Officer and a University of Florida alumnus, was on the Gator campus yesterday answering students’ questions about careers in engineering and career opportunities with AREVA in North America. AREVA has an established relationship with University of Florida, supporting the school’s nuclear engineering program and recruiting high-caliber engineering graduates. Students also had the opportunity to speak with AREVA employees and alumni Jennifer Musgrave and Pedro Salas during the event sponsored by the university’s American Nuclear Society chapter.

AREVA will be back on campus Mar. 19 hosting Indy Car driver Simona de Silvestro with the #78 Nuclear Clean Air Energy Indy Car. University engineering students and local high school students will talk with Simona and the KV Racing team about the advanced STEM skills (science, technology, engineering and math) needed to design, build, test and safely operate a high-performance Indy race car—and speak with the AREVA team about similar advanced STEM education required by the nuclear and renewable energy industries.

In support of community efforts, KV Racing and AREVA are challenging University of Florida engineering students to make a pledge to support STEM education outreach by volunteering in the local schools through campus resources. Two students making the STEM pledge (#STEMpledge) will win tickets to Simona’s next race at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg running March 22 through 24.

Along with these STEM-promotion activities, AREVA celebrated National Engineers Week by recognizing the significant contributions our 1,500 U.S. engineers make to engineering today, as well as their efforts to help prepare tomorrow’s engineers. Just like the Gator team, our employees have been busy engaging with students from elementary school up through university engineering programs to encourage them to make science, technology, engineering and math courses a key part of their education.
